About Alfahay

Our Commitment

Alfahay is commited to producing the most nutritional alfalfa available.  Alfahay strives to produce the highest quality product so customers can produce the best animals.  Alfahay is grown in the most productive, rich black soils of Iowa.
Alfahay believes for an animal to reach its best potential, it needs a high nutritional roughage year round.  Alfahay is different from conventional  hay,  as it has all the natural moisture and nutrients sealed in the bag.

"The white stuff"

This "white stuff" is actually a very wonderful thing when it comes to our Alfahay. The correct term for it would be, Yeast Culture. These yeast cultures are created during the fermentation process. They are also proof that the product's nutrients are more readily available and easier to digest for your animal. Yeast cultures are NOT mold. These cultures are full of good bacteria and enzymes that improve the health of your animals. Yeast in an animal’s diet is used to improve nutrient digestion, improves health & productivity, and improves animal performance.

Characteristics of a yeast culture
- white in color
- not slimy
- smells sweet like the Alfahay
- usually formed in a circle
If you are new to Alfahay and the yeast cultures, I always recommend smelling the product. If you happen to have a spot of mold, the smell will give it away instantly.
As always, please reach out with any questions!

Shelf Life

A guideline for Alfahay's shelf life is 16 months after the date is was bagged. You can find this date on the back of the bag near the top right corner. Alfahay does not "expire" like normal food. Alfahay is still good to feed unless the product has spoiled. You will know if it has spoiled by the smell and consistency. It will be slimy and smell of mold. The smell is your main indicator.

After opening your bag of Alfahay, we recommend feeding it within 7 days. If you cannot feed it within that time frame; store it in a cool, dark place. You can also put the bag into a large plastic tub with a lid, this will help extend the life of an open bag. Some customers freeze the product they are not using right away as well. Opened Alfahay bags can be fed after that 7 day window as long as the product does not look or smell spoiled (see note above as to what this looks like). We have had bags open for longer than 2 weeks and they were still as fresh as the day we opened them.

Feeding Instructions

Alfahay is to be used for the portion of the animals roughage intake.  The normal intake per day of Alfahay is very different from animal to animal.  Age, condition, workload, and other feed intakes will factor into how much Alfahay the animal eats per day.
Start by feeding 1 pound per hundred weight per day to horses and equivalent sized animals.  Feed 2 pounds per hundred weight per day to smaller animals like deer and goats.  Gradually (over 7-14 days) increase the quantity until you feel the desired condition of the animal is achieved.  Alfahay is not to be used as the only source of feed.
