About Alfahay

"The white stuff"

This "white stuff" is actually a very wonderful thing when it comes to our Alfahay. The correct term for it would be, Yeast Culture. These yeast cultures are created during the fermentation process. They are also proof that the product's nutrients are more readily available and easier to digest for your animal. Yeast cultures are NOT mold. These cultures are full of good bacteria and enzymes that improve the health of your animals. Yeast in an animal’s diet is used to improve nutrient digestion, improves health & productivity, and improves animal performance.

Characteristics of a yeast culture
- white in color
- spiderweb/milky like texture
- smells sweet and/or like apple cider vinegar
- usually formed in a circle
Characteristics of mold
- green/blue/grey in color
- can by slimy
- the smell is a dead giveaway to mold
If you are new to Alfahay and the yeast cultures, I always recommend checking out our Facebook page for more information as well.

Commonly Asked Questions

Q: My Alfahay is wet; is it spoiled?

A: Alfahay is a 50% moisture product. It is absolutely supposed to be moist.

Q: Why does Alfahay smell like vinegar?

A: The second ingredient in Alfahay is Apple Cider Vinegar!

Q: What is Alfahay's shelf life?

A: Look below for this answer!

Shelf Life

A guideline for Alfahay's shelf life is 16 months after the date is was bagged. You can find this date on the back of the bag near the top right corner. Alfahay does not "expire" like normal food. Alfahay is still good to feed unless the product has spoiled. You will know if it has spoiled by the smell and consistency. It will be slimy and smell of mold. The smell is your main indicator.

How to keep an unopened bag of Alfahay fresh : KEEP THE BAG 100% SEALED. If there is a tear, puncture, rip, or a cat climbs up your bag and puts lots of little claw holes in it, your bag WILL spoil. Why will it spoil? It will spoil due to oxygen reaching the Alfahay. Something to always remember: DO NOT EVER buy a bag that is not 100% sealed.

After opening your bag of Alfahay, we recommend feeding it within 7 days. If you cannot feed it within that time frame; store it in a cool, dark place. You can also put the bag into a large plastic/metal tub with a lid, this will help extend the life of an open bag. Some customers refrigerate/freeze the product they are not using right away as well. Opened Alfahay bags can be fed after that 7 day window as long as the product does not look or smell spoiled. We have had bags open for longer than 2 weeks and they were still as fresh as the day we opened them. Weather plays a huge factor in how long a bag can be opened without spoiling as well. Hot/humid weather will spoil an opened bag much faster than cold/dry weather will.

Feeding Instructions

Alfahay is to be used for the portion of the animals roughage intake.  The normal intake per day of Alfahay is very different from animal to animal.  Age, condition, workload, and other feed intakes will factor into how much Alfahay the animal eats per day.
Start by feeding 1 pound per hundred weight per day to horses and equivalent sized animals.  Feed 2 pounds per hundred weight per day to smaller animals like deer and goats.  Gradually (over 7-14 days) increase the quantity until you feel the desired condition of the animal is achieved.  Alfahay is not to be used as the only source of feed.
